Guardian of the Night is a mythical beast harmonizing the forms of three symbolic animals: the head of a Sambar deer, which in Pinuyumayan mythology guides spirits to the sacred mountain; the body of a majestic eagle, representing the ancestral connection and aristocratic authority of the Paiwan people; and a base inspired by the wild boar, symbolizing a primal and steadfast attachment to the land. The creature’s anatomy is meticulously crafted from aluminum wire and knotted rope structures, allowing it to bend and sway, mimicking the sinuous movements of a lifeform lurking in the dark. Its wings and tail are hand-woven from ramie fibers into circular patterns that gaze like "Spiritual Eyes"—all-seeing orbs capable of perceiving both ancestral spirits and the depths of the human heart.
In many Indigenous worldviews, the night is not merely a void of darkness, but a sacred threshold where the living and the ancestral spirits draw near. The Guardian of the Night stands as a sentinel of this realm, utilizing the deer's sensitivity and the eagle’s insight to watch over the memories of the forest and its people.
Symbolic Composition:
Head (Sambar Deer): The divine deer of Pinuyumayan myth, a guide leading souls to the sacred mountain.
Body (Eagle): A spiritual bird of the Paiwan people, symbolizing the authority of the chief and communion with ancestors.
Base (Wild Boar): A familiar presence of the wilderness, representing a deep, physical tether to the earth.
Craft & Concept:
The flexible structure of aluminum and rope enables a fluid, rhythmic motion, simulating a nocturnal presence. The ramie-woven wings act as "Spiritual Eyes," bridging the gap between the seen and unseen worlds. In this deep space of perception, the guardian awakens to protect the spirit of the mountain and the collective consciousness of the tribe.
